This work has his origin in the papers of the 'Basic Course of Paleopatología', organized by Unitat d'Antropologia of the Department of Animal Biology, Vegetable Biology and Ecology of the faculty of Sciences of Universitat Autónoma of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Hospital of Sagrat Cor of Barcelona, and realized in March, 2000. The Paleopatología studies the evidences of illness found in human remains and also in vegetables and animals. This science pluridisciplinaria has a strong medical and biological content although specialists proceeding from other disciplines contribute new concepts, ideas, finds and interpretations. The information that offers the book is eminently basic and it treats about the skills and his application, on which the diagnoses can be based. There is a series of topics that have received special attention: the vegetable and animal paleopatología, since it is a forgotten subject-matter, even in international classic texts; the ancient ADN, to the being a very important innovation for the studies of paleopatología and to represent perhaps the biggest challenge, but also the hope of future of this discipline; the pathologies in mummies, a topic of the most spectacular, and the paleopatología in hominids, for his relevancy in the studies of human evolution of big impact. The formation of the discipline is not ruled, but it is having a wide development in Spain in the last years.
